Sopot

Jean Haffner , a doctor in Napoleon’s army is accredited  with changing Sopot from a fishing village  into a health spa   about two hundred years ago.

Bathing in sea water was a central part of the treatment  but only for the brave. Some of the other possibilities were bathing in warm and cool water ,fresh and salt water in tubs and showers .There was also the ‘Rapid Bath’  where  large amounts of water was released onto the patient from a height.

As Sopot became more popular the number of visitors grew as well as the range of services on offer  and their  effectiveness also got better. The SPA also became more specialized .At that time bathing in the sea was segregated between men and women

As the 20th century dawned growing tourism and cleaner water brought more developments.  Some Visitors came to relax and  others with medical  ailments came to be cured .The Balneology Centre was established at that  time using the mineral-rich water for treating different complaints. The center still exists today beside the famous pier located in a beautiful building. The Rheumatological Hospital is housed there too,    providing water treatments that were first used at the beginning of the spa’s existence. There are four more spas in Sopot which treat people with rheumatic and respiratory illnesses.
